Academy Park area clean-up by FACT - need volunteers on Saturday, September 25 from 9 AM to 1 PM.
Volunteers and community based organizations are needed to help Friends of Alum Creek & Tributaries (FACT)
clean up the Alum Creek river banks, Academy and Wolfe Park areas, greenway trail and nearby roadsides.
Participants meet at AcademyPark's north parking lot at 250 S. Nelson Road, just south of East Broad Street.
This event is in conjunction with the 17th annual National Public Lands Day.
FACT has formally adopted the sensitive and heavily traveled Academy Park riverside area through a partnership with
Keep Columbus Beautiful, conducting at least three cleanups a year with this being the last big one planned here for 2010.
In 2008 FACT removed the lowhead dam, eradicated invasive Honeysuckle, and within the past couple of years planted hundreds of native trees and bushes to restore the riparian corridor ecology.
Attendees should dress accordingly with long pants, sturdy shoes, and hats.
Work gloves, trash bags, beverages and some snacks are provided.
The mission of Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries (FACT) is to preserve and protect the quality and beauty of the
Alum Creek watershed and promote environmentally responsible recreation, educational opportunities, and citizen participation at many levels. FACT is a community based non-profit volunteer organization serving as the environmental steward for the Alum Creek watershed within southern Delaware and Franklin counties.
National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public
lands Americans enjoy. Over 1,800 National Public Lands Day volunteer events are slated nationwide this September. http://www.publiclandsday.org In 2008 about 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees
and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants. FACT hosted a NPLD cleanup event in 2008 and 2009.
