Penned by scholar and former Fulbright Fellow David Wright Faladé, Black Cloud Rising is a powerful, compelling, and nuanced work of historical fiction that follows the heartrending journey of former slaves-turned Union soldiers and their sacrifice and courage in the fight for freedom.
Set in the 1860’s, Black Cloud Rising follows the Union forces’ African Brigade, a unit of recently freed and escaped slaves led by a one-armed, impassioned Abolitionist, as they fight the Confederacy and their former owners. At the heart of the narrative is Sergeant Richard Etheridge, the son of a slave and her master, raised with some privileges but constantly reminded of his place. He is fighting for more than territory—each raid is also an opportunity to free loved ones left behind, like Fanny, the woman he hopes to marry one day.
