Free Concert: Sounds of Summer

Sunday, August 18 - 6:30 PM

The Westerville Symphony at Otterbein University celebrates the dog days of summer with its Sounds of Summer concert on Sunday, August 18th at 6:30 pm.  The free concert takes place at the Amphitheater at Alum Creek Park and is part of the Westerville Community Concert series.

This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing by featuring music about space.  Unfortunately, Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, previously listed as our guest, will not be able to join us for this concert.

The concert music includes movements from Gustav Holst’s The Planets.  Premiered in 1918, it continues to be a widely popular and enduring symphonic masterpiece.   Holst was inspired by the astronomical aspects of the planets writing to a friend in 1913: “…recently the character of each planet suggested lots to me, and I have been studying astrology fairly closely.”  We will perform Mars: The Bringer of War, Mercury: The Winged Messenger and Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity.

Many movies and documentaries have been made about space and the soundtracks, evoking the majestic aura of their space themes, are perfect for outdoor concerts.  The symphony will perform music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Apollo 13, The Right Stuff, Star Trek and Take Flight.
