The tour will be narrated by historian Randy Rogers, who also serves as the Executive Director of Green Lawn Cemetery Association. The tour is designed for the casual cyclist who wants to learn more about these iconic Columbus landmarks. A truly exceptional afternoon with an exceptional guide!
The tour begins with a look inside Green Lawn Abbey, a mausoleum that opened in 1929, fell into disrepair, and is now being beautifully restored. The abbey is a superb example of neoclassical architecture expertly executed and configured like an Italian villa. Green Lawn Abbey is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The tour then proceeds by bike through Green Lawn Cemetery--one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Ohio. Green Lawn Cemetery represents a vast treasure, encompassing more than 200 years of history and is the resting place of many prominent Columbus residents, including the families of four U.S. Presidents. The tour will stop at several locations for short, informative talks about notable graves, monuments, family mausoleums, and a chapel. The cemetery is also home to several state champion trees, as well as a recognized bird sanctuary.
Columbus Outdoor Pursuits provides easy-to-ride cruiser style bikes and helmets, or you may bring your own bike and helmet (please indicate on the registration). Please allow about 3 hours for the entire tour. Restrooms and free parking are available at Green Lawn Abbey, 700 Greenlawn Avenue -- the start and end point of the tours.
If weather conditions do not permit a safe trip, we will reschedule, or provide you with a full refund.
