Online Class: Capturing Joy with Poetry

This workshop will explore the basics of writing poetry and the art of writing about joy. Participants will be guided through a series of generative writing exercises geared to introduce poetry. Through the reading of poetry, writing exercises, and discussion, we will explore craft, poetic tools and forms, and create original poems.



Barbara Fant has been writing and performing poetry for 13 years. She has represented Columbus, OH in 9 National Poetry Slam competitions and placed 8th out of 96 poets in the 2017 Women of the World Poetry Slam. She is the Artistic Director for Harmony Project, a TEDx speaker, a Columbus Makes Art Campaign artist, a teaching artist at Transit Arts, a poetry instructor in correctional institutions and schools, and the co-curator of the reading series Paging Columbus. Barbara is the author of several chapbooks and the co-author of two stage productions, and her work has been featured by Button Poetry and Def Poetry Jam, and published in Electric Literature, Harness Magazine, and by The Ohio State University Press. Barbara has completed residencies in Idyllwild, California and Havana, Cuba, and installations of her work can be found in the Columbus Museum of Art and at The Columbus Foundation. Barbara believes in the transformative power of art and considers poetry her ministry.
