This event will be held in-person on the Thurber House
lawn (77 Jefferson Ave., Columbus, OH 43215). Our outdoor events remain a
great way to enjoy an evening of good friends, good food, and great
books, nestled comfortably on the side lawn of Thurber House, and
celebrate some of the best authors Ohio has to offer.
back! We are so excited to host our friends on the Thurber House lawn
once again! Our first in-person event features writer and filmmaker
Claudia Owusu, as well as appearances by Thurber House Flip the Page teen writers and Thurber House Young Docents.
Owusu is a Ghanaian-American writer and filmmaker based in Columbus,
Ohio. She writes from these two liminal spaces, internally and
externally, trying to make sense of them. She believes in the beauty of
community and the intimate stories we share when we think no one is
listening. Her work often engages the spaces that Black women and girls
occupy, namely their relationship with safety, carefreeness, and
Claudia’s writing has appeared in Vogue Magazine, Clockhouse, Quiz & Quill Literary Magazine, Wusgood.black, 20.35 African Contemporary Poetry, and Ohio’s Best Emerging Poets
2017 and 2018. Her short films have screened at the Black Femme
Supremacy Film Festival, Ohio Shorts Film Festival, and the No Evil Eye
Micro Cinema. Her feature documentary, How One Young Columbus Activist is Leading a Fight to Remove Police from Schools, is forthcoming with Frame Media.
Thurber House Flip the Page and Young Docents
Flip the Page: Central Ohio’s Teen Literary Journal is
written, staffed, and produced by Central Ohio teens and Thurber House.
Our mission is to provide a showcase for the work of young local
writers and offer opportunities to learn about submission, critique,
editorial design, and publication. The Thurber House Young Docent
Program teaches middle school students about James Thurber and Thurber
House, prepares them to give tours of Thurber House, and engages them in
activities such as holiday decorating and field trips to the OSU
5:30–6:30 pm — Optional: Bring your own picnic dinner and come hang out on the lawn during this time frame.
6:30 pm–7:30 pm — Sit back, relax, and enjoy the program!
