Each summer, the Thurber House lawn plays host to a series of outdoor literary picnics and readings with authors who have an Ohio connection. Join us for this long-running tradition of good friends, good food, and great books!
Marika McCoola is an illustrator, educator, and New York Times bestselling author of Baba Yaga's Assistant. She is the 2019 Thurber House Children’s Writer-in-Residence. Baba Yaga’s Assistant features Russian folklore icon Baba Yaga, a fearsome witch who lives in a house on chicken legs. When lonely teenager Masha enters the haunted wood, Baba Yaga chooses her as her assistant, requiring her to pass a series of difficult tests to earn her place. No easy task, with children on the menu!
This picnic will also feature readings from the talented writers of Thurber House’s literary journal, Flip the Page, which is written, staffed, and produced by Central Ohio teenagers and Thurber House staff. It showcases the work of local writers, ages 13 to 19, and provides experience in submission, critique, editorial design, and publication. Submissions and artwork are juried by a committee of teen writers from the Thurber House Young Writers' Studio, a semi-monthly writing workshop for high school students.
This is a ThurberHouse@35 event, celebrating the 35th anniversary of Thurber House.
Picnicking begins at 5:30 pm. Our Young Docents will offer free guided tours of Thurber House. The program begins at 6:45 pm. Thurber House remains open after the reading for touring, book buying, and signing.
Menu: Rustic Italian sandwich, pasta salad, chips, and a brownie.
