Collage: Storytelling, One Fragment at a Time

Instructor: Lisa Lopez Snyder

Much like a visual cut-and-paste collage, literary collage is a fun and unusual way to tell a story. Collage uses short semi-linked vignettes to make a distinctive stamp on a story, whether fiction or nonfiction. Writers like Joyce Carol Oates and Lydia Davis have employed this technique in their writing. Collage can reveal striking contrasts on a theme and as well as illustrate how the unsaid parts of a story can have dramatic, reflective, or humorous impact. Collage is also a great way to use “play” to help us unlock our creative side. In this workshop, we’ll do some writing exercises using a structured three-part pattern, followed by informal techniques with every day items such as photos, phone texts, and grocery and to-do lists — to develop stories that resonate. In addition to the usual pen/pencil and paper writing tools, bring two personal photos and a grocery or to-do list to this session.

INSTRUCTOR: Lisa Lopez Snyder’s essays and short stories have been featured in 34th Parallel, Adelaide, Gravel, The Raleigh Review, The Foliate Oak Literary Magazine, and other magazines. Her essay, “In Transit,” won The Chattahoochee Review’s 2011 Lamar York Prize for Nonfiction and she was named the 2015 Carl Sandburg Writer-in-Residence
