Writing Workshop: Your Pitch to Editors

Monday, April 29 - 6:00 PM

MONDAY, APRIL 29

How to Pitch Your Piece the Way Editors Wish Everyone Would

Instructor: Brooke Preston

So you've written something (or are thinking about writing something) you'd like to have published. The only thing standing in your way is that most mysterious of gatekeepers, the publication's editor. In this workshop, Brooke Preston (writer, satirist and Co-Founder/Editor of The Belladonna Comedy) will help writers learn how to identify the best potential home for their piece, use submission guidelines to their benefit, avoid common pitfalls, and craft the kind of pitch editors love, in order to optimize your odds and strengthen editorial relationships. We'll cover tricky pitches like what to do with a timely piece, when to send an idea versus a full work, and we'll even begin to craft and provide feedback actual pitches in class. This is a fun and low-stakes way to build the skills to improve your visibility, bylines, and potential income as a writer. All are welcome, no experience required.

INSTRUCTOR: Brooke Preston is an Ohio-based comedy writer, satirist and storyteller. Her work has been featured on McSweeney’s, Reductress, Romper, Men's Health, The Huffington Post, and other fine outlets and crumpled napkins; she is a proud faculty member of The Second City, where she teaches the online satire writing program. Brooke is a co-founder and editor of The Belladonna Comedy, an online satire publication by women and non-binary writers, for everyone. She and her fellow editors co-wrote the satire book New Erotica for Feminists: Satirical Fantasies of Love, Lust and Equal Pay. Follow her on Twitter at @bigu.
